PROTOCOL FOR MULTIDRUG-RESISTANT ACINETOBACTER (MDR-AB)
Hospital approved disinfectant should be used for the following:
- Routine cleaning of all bathrooms (patient and staff)
- Routine cleaning of all sinks/ faucets
- Terminal cleaning of all rooms (single and two bedded if both beds empty):
- All surfaces
- Bedside tables
- Beds – siderails
- Headboards
- Mattresses
- Shelves
- Routine cleaning of soiled utility room
- Routine cleaning of clean utility room
- Routine cleaning of all shared equipment (between patient usage):
- I.V. poles
- Commodes
- Wheelchairs
- Stretchers
- Glucometers
- Terminal cleaning should be performed by designated personnel and those personnel should not clean
areas occupied by non-MDR-Acinetobacter patients.
- Change mop water after cleaning MDR-Acinetobacter patient room is completed. Change mop head and
send to laundry. Leave mop handle in patient’s room (disinfect with terminal cleaning).
- Change curtains and send to laundry during terminal cleaning.
Ventilator equipment and other reusable equipment should always be cleaned and disinfected according
to manufacturer’s guidelines between patients.
