Research
The objective of the research branch of the Hospital Epidemiology and Infection Control
Department at The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions is
to examine components of healthcare associated infections, healthcare
related outcomes, and diverse issues related to spread of disease in the
healthcare setting. We aim to understand risks for disease acquisition and
the spread of epidemiologically important organisms to develop innovative
approaches and tools to identify, prevent, and control these events that
impact on patient safety. We hope to further the knowledge of epidemiology
of healthcare associated infections, and work towards creating
a safer, more satisfying atmosphere for our patients, visitors, and healthcare workers.
HEIC research is proud to be one of the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention's (CDC) 7 national EPICENTERS OF EXCELLENCE. As part of the
Epicenter program, we work collaboratively with 7 other pre-eminent academic medical
centers, researching the most significant and prevelant infections and studing emerging issues
facing healthcare settings across the country. See the Current Studies for more information on these projects.
Our areas of interest include:
- New Therapies for VRE
- Catheter Associated UTI
- Catheter Associated BSI
